Calcium carbonate rich water pours from the pools of White Elephant Terrace. White Elephant Terrace is a feature of Mammoth Hot Springs, a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone NP, created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring cooled and deposited calcium carbonate (over two tons flow into Mammoth each day in a solution). The limestone from rock formations along the fault between Mammoth and Norris Geyser Basin is the source of the calcium carbonate. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
