Is It Time?

Yellowstone NP

On a late August afternoon herd bulls, separated from the cows, graze in the meadows along NE Entrance Rd near Lamar Valley, anxiously awaiting the rut. The largest male in this small group appears to be exhibiting a behavior known as flehmen, testing the air for the presence of pheromones signalling estrus. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
