Late afternoon light highlights the textures of the exposed surfaces. The red and white colored striae are bentonite, a clay, which is very soft and smooth when wet. When rapid drying occurs the surface shrinks, cracks and curls up at the edges. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
