Rock City, mid-river life

Montana

Rock City is located directly north of Valier, Montana. The hoodoos are tall towers, up to 20 feet, were carved by erosion from wind, water. The Two Medicine River Canyon forms a wind tunnel, removing dirt and debris, revealing the limestone. The hoodoos create side canyons one can walk through, meaning everywhere you look there is a different perspective. Early morning light renders the east-facing surfaces of the formations golden and afternoon finds the shadows shifted 180° with colors shifting toward the red-orange, the so-called "Golden Hours." Midday light is full-spectrum with little color shift. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
