Pyramid Island
Pyramid Lake
The Pyramid Island tufa mound is located along the eastern shore of Pyramid Lake, below the Lake Range. It extends about 400 feet above the surface of the lake. The Paiute name for this island is Wono, meaning cone-shaped basket. Note the girdle of carbonate cement located about one-fifth up the mound which was formed when the lake was at or near its overflow point. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
