Temperature Inversion

Sometimes a small layer of warm air can form where the temperature increases with height. This layer is called an inversion. This often happens in areas of high pressure, where the air high up often sinks towards the ground. As it falls, it dries out and warms up. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
