This cow, separated from the herd, had apparently just dropped this calf. She was licking the calf clean and encouraging the calf to stand with low, soft, inquiring grunts and, in return, gentle grunts in response from the calf. After ten or fifteen minutes the cow gradually walked away, with the tiny calf teetering along beside. Photo © copyright by Robert Faucher.
